I-IAmstrad CPC 464 was one of the first computers of the general public launched by Amstrad in 1984. Available in several language versions (QWERTY, AZERTY, Spanish), there are also two separate keyboard models: first diver model , and the second model with flexible membrane . These structural differences influence coin compatibility, common age-related problems, and restoration techniques.
First version – Diver Keyboard
The the first model of theAmstrad CPC 464 is equipped with keys high, recognizable by their characteristic shape. Over time, these keys may yellow, but they often remain mechanically intact.
Technical specifications:
- Keys individually removable highs
- Diver system + conductive membranes
- Four separate membranes according to the keyboard areas
- Metal support plate , subject to oxidation
- Motherboard in bakelite integrating electrical contacts
- Multicolored Tablet connecting the keyboard to the motherboard main
A practical advantage of this model: keys can be removed one by one without disassembly of the entire keyboard, thus facilitating local cleaning or replacement.
This type of keyboard seems to have never been produced in AZERTY version. On the other hand, German and Spanish variants exist, often marketed under the trade mark Schneider , official partnerAmstrad in continental Europe.
Second version – Soft membrane keyboard
The second modelAmstrad CPC 464 adopts a more modern design with keys low , inspired by that of the future CPC 6128. This change marks an evolution in the internal design of the keyboard.
Technical specifications:
- Keys low clips – requires complete dismantling to be removed
- Flexible membrane printed – ensuring all electrical contacts
- Hard PVC support plate
- Compact and robust structure
- Fragile flexible tablet connecting the keyboard to the motherboard
Unlike the first model, this keyboard uses a single flexible contact sheet, engraved with conductive tracks. This system simplifies manufacturing while improving overall reliability.
However, there is a notable disadvantage: keys are welded to the chassis via a clip system, making it impossible to remove them individually.Complete disassembly of the keyboard is therefore necessary to access the internal elements.
Coins compatibility between CPC 464 and CPC 6128
A common question among collectors and repairers is:
Are CPC 6128 parts compatible with CPC 464 parts ?
The answer is: no, not really .
Although the second model of CPC 464 and the keyboard of CPC 6128 share a similar architecture (keys low, flexible membrane, PVC plate), they are not interchangeable because of subtle but important differences:
- Non-exchangeable membranes – the matrix tracks differ slightly.
- Key different clipping – some attachments do not match exactly.
- Flexible tablet incompatible – different length or format.
- Interior metal support – variable dimensions or fixing points.
In short: even if the two keyboards closely resemble each other, they must be considered as two separate models , each requiring their own spare parts.
Restore CPC 464 Keyboard – Practical Guide
Over time, both types of keyboards may present problems related to wear, oxidation or membrane deterioration. Here are the recommended steps to restore these models vintage :
For the first model (divers):
- Remove keys individual if necessary
- Demonstrate housing to access membranes and metal plate
- Clean conductive membranes with an electronic cleaner
- Check and reweld connections on multicolor tablecloth
- Replace membranes if oxidized or not conductive
- Clean metal plate support to remove rust trace
For the second model (soft membrane):
- Completely Demonstrate Keyboard – the keys are not removable individually
- Inspect the flexible membrane – replace if damaged or broken
- Clean the PVC support plate and check its stability
- Control the flexible sheet – fragile and prone to rupture
- Replace complete membrane if necessary
Complete restoration kits are available in my shop, specially designed to facilitate the repair of these historic keyboards.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions on CPC 464 Keyboards
Can I find an AZERTY keyboard for the first CPC 464 model ?
It seems that this version was never produced in series. AZERTY models are usually associated with the second keyboard model or CPC 6128.
Are CPC 6128 parts compatible with CPC 464 parts ?
No, despite design similarities, CPC 6128 parts are not generally not interchangeable with CPC 464 v2. Differences in size, internal arrangement and connectivity make exchanges difficult or impossible.
How do I know if my keyboard is the first or second model ?
Observe the shape of keys : if they are high and easily removable, you have to deal with the first model. If they are low and clipped, it is the second model.
